Although freemasonry is secular and multi-denominational, all candidates for membership must declare a belief in a Supreme Being. All candidates must also be of demonstrable good character.

The qualifying age for freemasonry is 18 years.

Serious and eligible applicants should write for further particulars to the Lodge Secretary. Three or four years is not a long time in the life of a freemason, so undergraduates who are contemplating becoming members of the University Lodge of Chester are strongly advised to consider an application to join the Lodge earlier rather than later in their student careers.

Please note that University Lodge of Chester is governed by the Constitutions of the United Grand Lodge of England which, following the example of medieval stonemasons, is, and has always been, restricted to men. Women Freemasons have two separate Grand Lodges which are restricted to women. Anyone interested in further information about women's freemasonry should contact either The Grand Secretary, The Order of Women Freemasons, 27 Pembridge Gardens, London, W2 4EF, telephone number 020 7229 2368, or The Grand Secretary, The Honorable Fraternity of Ancient Freemasons, 402 Finchley Road, Childs Hill, London NW2 2HR, telephone 020 7443 5268. The latter organisation also operates a University Scheme that may be of interest to women university students.
