When Shivraj Bhalla first contacted the University Lodge of Chester about joining Freemasonry, little did they know they were welcoming a fourth-generation Freemason into their ranks. Even more surprising was the journey his family undertook to witness his initiation. Traveling over 7,000 kilometres from Nairobi, Kenya, his father, Satyan Bhalla, and grandfather, Jugal Bhalla, a Past District Deputy Grand Master, made the trip to Chester to be part of the historic moment.
On February 17, 2025, at Queen Street, Chester, Shivraj took his first steps into Freemasonry in a special double initiation ceremony alongside fellow candidate Cameron Hand. The event was graced by senior leaders of the Province of Cheshire, underscoring the significance of the occasion.
For the Bhalla family, Freemasonry is more than a tradition—it is a bond that has transcended generations and continents. Their presence at the ceremony symbolized the fraternity’s enduring spirit of unity and brotherhood. Witnessing Shivraj’s initiation was not just a proud moment for his family but also a testament to the global nature of Freemasonry, bringing together brethren from all walks of life, no matter the distance.
This remarkable story of dedication and heritage serves as a reminder that Freemasonry continues to connect individuals across borders, strengthening the values of brotherhood and tradition worldwide.
